Shufan
Zhang was born in April 1943
in Jilin City, Jilin province.
He is a 1965 graduate of the Arts and Crafts School
of Beijing. Professor Fenghui Guo was his calligraphy
advisor. He also spent two years for vocational study
in the Department of Calligraphy and Arts in Beijing Normal
College and graduated in 1987
Mr. Zhang developed his interest in calligraphy in the
childhood accepting influence from his father.He took
calligraphy as his hobby until 1976 when he decided to
make it his career. Since 1979,Mr. Zhang has been focusing
on the calligraphy style of Yuzhao Zhang, a famous calligr-apher
in the late Qing Dynasty and his style is also called
Nangong style. He became famous in the calligraphy field
for his Zhang-style drawing as early as 1982.
He has had many personal exhibitions in Japan, Korea,
Malaysia, Italy, as well as domestic cities such as Beijing,
Yantai, Qingdao, etc.
He is the editor or writer of the following works: <<Drawing
in Weibei Style>>, <<Drawing in Gongquan Liu
Style>>, <<Dictionary of Calligraphy>>,
<<The Preface of Tengwangge, Written by Yuzhao Zhang
>>,and <<Sample of Regular Style in Yuzhao
Zhang Style>>.
Mr. Zhang also anchored the TV show hosted by the China Central
TV. He was the anchor of the Seminar in Calligraphy program
in 1989,lecturing Weibei Style and Liu Style writing.
He organized <<National Exhibition of Calligraphy
in Yuzhao Zhang Style>>and <<International
Seminar in Calligraphy in Yuzhao Zhang Style>> in
1990 and 1992 in Beijing.
The famous TV series, <<Shuihu>>, requested
Mr. Zhang to write the title for the series in 1997. In 1998,
a computer company, Beijing Hanyikeyin Inc., invited Mr.
Zhang to make the <<Nangong Style>> character
set for their software.
With all his achievement, Mr. Zhang received the Academic
Award from the UNESCO in 2001.
He has attended many affairs in calligraphy and received
many top awards. His works has been collected by many
museums. They can also be found in many art dictionaries
